The black & white image that we have chosen as our logo is a posthumous gift from Rini Templeton, a prolific artist who committed her life to activism on behalf of social and environmental justice. She generously created hundreds of artworks for the use, copyright free, of groups and causes that shared her values. After her death in 1986 at the young age of 50, her heirs and admirers have continued her work by making her images available through her website, RiniArt.org.

It is a privilege for “Rocky Flats: A Call to Guardianship” to use as our logo Rini Templeton’s image of a starry sky and a mountain backdrop with its spiderweb-like array of lights in the foreground. The lights could be Denver, Boulder, Golden, or they could be Rocky Flats. We don’t know. But the lights are obviously a human intervention with the natural world and therefore a human responsibility, and that is what makes this particular image a perfect match for our work.

We feel Rini Templeton’s presence as we dedicate ourselves to the task of implementing the concept of Nuclear Guardianship, combining human creativity of all descriptions with science, history, and the Precautionary Principle, to keep the memory alive that plutonium and other dangerous particles remaining in the soil at Rocky Flats will remain dangerous for far longer into the future than we can even begin to imagine (more than a quarter of a million years). We are encouraged by Rini’s devotion of her creative talents to the causes she belived in as we work to to keep people and creatures as safe as possible from these invisible but deadly risks.
