Plutonium, the Jefferson Parkway and the Rocky Flats Wildlife Refuge Report on recent soil sampling at Rocky Flats

Summation:

All 50 samples from the 2010 and 2011 sampling campaigns were tested for total activity and by gamma isotopic analysis. A subset of the samples was tested commercially for plutonium, radioactively-hot particles, along with confirmation testing for uranium and thorium.

Plutonium exceeded reported background levels by two orders of magnitude at locations that match those noted in the Krey Hardy report. (P. W. Krey and E. P. Hardy, 1970, “Plutonium in Soil Around the Rocky Flats Plant”)

Naturally-occurring total activity, uranium, and thorium levels are elevated in this area, and were not used as indicators of contamination.

There was no statistically significant difference between this data set and the 1970 data set. Plutonium losses appear to be approximately equal in magnitude to plutonium inputs in the Indiana St. area.

The portion of the study area surrounding Indiana St. was contaminated with plutonium isotopes, traces of americium. This zone also contained uranium and thorium bearing monazite particles. Although monazites are naturally occurring, these particles nevertheless represent an inhalation hazard, as they were in the respirable size range of 0.5 to 5.0 microns. Particles of silicates containing uranium and thorium were also detected.

Rebuttal to Scott Surovchak’s – DOE/LM - Presentation of April 6, 2015 – Rocky Flats Stewardship Council

The April 6, 2015 presentation by Scott Surovchak, DOE-LM, before the Rocky Flats Stewardship Council (RFSC) and the public is the primary focus of the scheduled September 14, 2015 rebuttal by Anne Fenerty and Jon Lipsky. Our rebuttal includes the March 25, 2015 memo authored by David Abelson & Rik Getty and the “Rocky Flats History: Timeline of Key Events,” version 3.0 of December 2014. Jon Lipsky stated during the second Public Comment portion of the April 6, 2015 RFSC meeting that “some” of the information provided in Surovchak’s presentation “re-writes the history of Rocky Flats.”

Harvey Nichols, Emeritus Professor of Biology, worked at University of Colorado – Boulder for forty years, after positions at Yale (Biology) and U-Wisconsin - Madison (Meteorology). Harvey got involved with Rocky Flats in 1975, when he began tracking pollen drifts around the site, and testing for airborne transport of radioactive material. British born and educated, he works primarily on arctic paleo-ecology, past and present responses of arctic ecosystems to ancient and modern climatic changes, in northern Canada and arctic Siberia.
